"So how's the book going?"

Occassionally I'm asked if I've made a lot of money from writing. Makes me want to roll on the floor. I forget many people don't realize most writers are never published. Many published writers are never paid. Most paid writers are still working full time day-jobs, able to scratch out a meager existance, if they're lucky. And most of those writers work hard to squeeze in every moment to engage in their craft, simply because they love the process (and don't mind bleeding fingertips).

They don't care that less than 10% of the world population reads books daily. They overlook the curt dimissals of callous aquisitions editors. Some of them will even forego full-time employment and live on food stamps, if that's what it takes to get the words on the page. Others put in 70-80 hour work weeks, to live on the edge of survival. The gift of the magi is both curse and blessing.

To use a JUNK cliche, you gotta take the bitter with the sweet. With a little luck, you'll reach the end of the rainbow. You might not find a pot of gold, or even a pot to piss in. But you'll look back on the journey, and laugh your impoverished ass off.
